14 fortunate IB students were privileged to be invited to the 15th annual Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) seminar, opened by its founder President Martti Ahtisaari. Experts gathered in the Finnish National Museum in April to discuss global issues relating to politics, the environment, economy and human welfare. Alex de Waal is the director of the World Peace Foundation. Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na´im is a specialist in Sharia Law. Strobe Talbott is a former Deputy Secretary of State during the Clinton administration. Abigail Disney is a celebrated documentary film-maker (and yes, she is related to Walt Disney!). In fact my favourite quote came from Disney: “Peace is not the absence of conflict; it is the presence of justice”. Tarja Halonen was also in attendance and we recognized many Finnish movers and shakers among the audience. Bill Clinton sent a special video message. All in all, this was a memorable event for students and a real highlight in the calendar for all participants. Let´s make this world a better place! Goodness knows, there is plenty of work that needs to be done.
Our own Mr Matooq enjoying the atmosphere.
