The sun might have stubbornly refused to shine as we gathered in the auditorium to celebrate the award of 18 Diplomas to hard working graduates but nothing could lessen the warmth of the occasion. We were delighted to invite Melody Karvonen, from the Finnish Parents´ Association, to deliver a keynote speech on the theme of happiness. Melody quoted various figures including Gandhi, who defined happiness as being an accord between one´s thoughts, words and actions. Wise words! She spoke movingly about her own trials and how she overcame obstacles to her own happiness since moving from Iran in the 1970s. The Principal reminded graduates to thank their parents for the love and support shown to them over the years. The coordinator had the pleasure to award stipends to students who best embodied the attributes in the learner profile - Mona Syrjä and Juhani Ahonen were the well-deserved recipients. Annette Rapo was recognized for the excellent progress made during her years on the programme, and rewarded accordingly. The prize for academic excellence went to Mark Laukkanen, who ranks among some of the best students anywhere in the world. Following Mona´s thoughtful speech on behalf of the graduates it was time to head outside for a group picture. Just at this moment - with the cameras clicking and smiles flashing - the sun began to shine. We couldn´t have asked for more.
